Super Y League U17's & Super 20 Team Do Well in Cocoa Expo Cup

Silver Spring, MD – Real Maryland FC, a member of the United Soccer Leagues, is proud to share it’s U17 and U20 performance at the Cocoa Expo Cup in Florida.  The event was played December 27-30 at the Cocoa SoccerPlex in Cocoa, Florida.  Both the Real Maryland FC Super Y League U17 Team and the Super 20 Team placed in the tournament.

The Super Y League U17 Team, new to the club this year, has gelled nicely in a short amount of time.  So quickly in fact, they were able make it all the way to the championship game.  Narrowly missing the trophy, the boys fell in a Penalty Kick Shootout to South Carolina.  Another bright spot in their run to the championship was Drew Hawk.  Drew was named tournament MVP.

The Super 20 Team, who finished in the top 4 nationally last season, also did well.  The Super 20 Team has set the bar high for themselves and the rest of the club.  Reaching the playoffs again, they fell short of the Championship Match by losing to the Ghana National Academy Team.  The Super 20’s impressed the Ghana Federation that they have inquired about coming a possibly playing another match here at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, MD.  There was redemption for the boys when they beat the Canadian Academy Team in the Consolation Game.

“There is so much talent at this event and our two older youth teams did well,” said Head Coach of the U17’s & U20’s Roger Fernandez.  “I am very happy with our teams it shows that we are moving in the right direction.”  In addition to the top level competition, many coaches from universities and colleges from across the nation were present at the tournament.  There was a lot of interest in many of the players on both the U17’s and U20’s.  This is high standard that has been set for the rest of Real Maryland’s Super Y League Teams.

There will be tryouts this weekend on Sunday, January 11 at the SoccerPlex in Germantown, Maryland.  There will be tryouts from 1-3 pm for the Super Y League U14, U15 & U16 Teams.  A second tryout will be conducted from 3-5 pm for the Super Y League U17 Team and the Super 20 Team.  For more information please visit the tryout section on our website at or contact General Manager David Noyes at
