Real Maryland FC beats CSD Municipal 2-0

Silver Spring, MD --Real Maryland FC played host to CSD Municipal this past Saturday night in front of a very large and energetic crowd at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, MD.  Despite the sea of red in the stands and the Heavens opening up at halftime, the Monarchs were able to beat the 26-Time First Division Champion of Guatemala by a score of 2-0.

The Monarchs came out to play early and put heavy pressure on the visitor right from the start.  The high pressure paid off when home side was awarded a corner kick in the first 15 minutes of play.  Off the ensuing kick, Gary Brooks got a head on the ball and sent it off the crossbar.  In a scramble in front of the goal, #22 Ryan Cordeiro was able to drive home what was to be, the game winning goal.

As the first half wore on, tempers began to flare as the play became increasingly competitive.  Play had to be stopped for several minutes, close to the end of the first half, to separate the two teams who had decided to hold a conference in the center of the pitch.  As the half drew to a close, the skies opened up and sent the fans and players seeking shelter.

After a 45 minute half-time, both teams and a large number of fans returned to finish out the game.  The mostly Municipal-pro crowd stayed during the rain delay to see their team return to the field.  As the game got back under way, the fans didn’t miss a beat and neither did the game.

Early in the second half, within the first ten minutes of play, Real Maryland’s Jamie Holmes put away the second and final goal of the night in similar fashion to the team’s first.  Off of another set piece, the Municipal defense was unable to clear a loose ball in the box and the Monarchs were able to capitalize.

Real Maryland FC will be back in USL 2 action next weekend when they travel down to Richmond to play the kickers on Saturday, August 1st.  On Sunday, August 2nd, the Monarchs will turn around and play the Harrisburg City Islanders at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, MD at 4 pm.  Both games have heavy playoff implications for Real Maryland FC as they sit fifth in the table.  The top 5 teams make the playoffs in USL Second Division beginning on August 19th.

Real Maryland FC participates in the Second Division of the United Soccer Leagues.  All 2009 Regular Season Home Games will be played at Lester Stadium at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, MD.  For more information, please visit realmaryland.us or contact General Manager David Noyes at (301) 933-6460.
