Monarchs Defender Earns First International Cap

Daryl Ferguson represents Barbados in losing effort

By Matt Skinner

Daryl Ferguson earned his first cap for Barbados (ranked 121st) as the side went down 8-0 to the United States (ranked 21st) in their CONCACAF second round first leg qualifying match at the Home Depot Center.

Starting as a central defender for the Caribbean side, there was nothing Ferguson could do but watch as Clint Dempsey got on the end of a 20 yard pass to open up scoring for the United States team in the first minute of the game. Further goals from Michael Bradley (12’) and Brian Ching (20’) rounded out the scoring for the United States as they took a 3-0 lead at the end of the first half.

The Barbadian team regrouped early in the second half and defended well until Landon Donovan found the net from a 30 yard free kick in the 59th minute. This led to further goals from Dempsey (63’) and Eddie Johnson (82’) before Ferguson was unfortunate enough to give away an own goal in the 86th minute. Ching scored again for the United States in the 89th minute to seal an 8-0 win.

Barbados now returns home to Kensington Oval, where they will host the second leg against the United States, Sunday at 3PM.
