Report: Harrisburg 3- Real Maryland 0

Real Maryland’s road woes continued tonight as the expansion team fell to defending champions Harrisburg 3-0 at the Skyline Sports Complex.

The Monarchs started the game brightly creating numerous chances, but failed to capitalize. The best of the lot came in the 15th minute when Harrisburg captain Mo Oduor brought down Dennis Alas 40 yards from goal. The Salvadorian picked himself up and fired the resulting free kick off the crossbar.

Real Maryland was punished for its carelessness in front of goal in the 30th minute. Milton Blanco broke free down the right and crossed for Ryan Heins who stole in-between the center backs to finish with a clinical header.

Harrisburg doubled their lead on the cusp of halftime. Monarch’s defender Marcos Chantel conceded a free kick on the left side of the box. David Schofield stepped up and whipped in a low curling ball that bypassed everyone including Emilio Zelaya in the Real Maryland goal.

Heins thought he had his second in first half stoppage time when he finished off a pass from Schofield, but the Referee’s Assistant had his flag raised for offsides.

Harrisburg dominated possession in the second half and effectively ended the match as a contest in the 62nd minute. This time Heins was free to run down the left before crossing to Oduor deep in the box. Oduor took the ball down, cut back, and slid his shot past the hapless Zelaya to seal the City Islanders first victory of the season.
