Preview: Charlotte Eagles v. Real Maryland

By Matt Skinner

Real Maryland (3-10-1) concludes its travels to North Carolina with a must win game against USL-2 league leaders Charlotte Eagles (10-1-4) this Saturday at 7PM at the Restart Field-Charlotte Christian School Stadium.

Charlotte is currently perched at the top of the ladder after defeating local rivals Wilmington Hammerheads 4-3 away last weekend. The Eagles were a goal down within the first 15th minutes, but two goals by Jorge Herrera and one by Robert Ssejjemba helped rally the team together for a 3-2 lead at half-time. Jonah Long’s second-half goal secured the derby win for the league leaders as well as furthering the Eagles’ unbeaten streak to 9 games.

The two sides first encountered each other back in June, with Charlotte departing the Maryland SoccerPlex that day 1-0 victors. The Monarchs will arrive this weekend with the intention of preventing the Eagles from repeating that result again.

“We still have six games to go,” iterates Real Maryland defender Marcus Chantel on the task ahead. “We just need to work together and stay together and give it everything we have for the rest of the season.”

This will be the Monarchs’ second fixture in the span of two days. The team first play Wilmington on Friday night before making the short trip to Charlotte. Real Maryland fans are encouraged to make the journey down to Charlotte and cheer their team on!
